Frequently Asked Questions

What does "neurodiversity affirming therapy" mean?

Neurodiversity refers to the understanding that everyone's brain is different. At The Power of Speech, we take the time to get to know your child's unique learning style and then support them with any skills they are still developing. We recognize that there are so many different ways of learning, thinking, and interacting with the world, all of which are valid. In our play-based therapy sessions, we prioritize a child feeling safe and respected from the moment they enter our office. We know this is the foundation for learning and developing a positive self-identity!

Where will services be provided?

Therapy is provided at our office: 40 South Street, Suite 101, Marblehead, MA 01945

Do you offer at-home therapy on the weekends?

We don’t right now, but maybe in the future!

What forms of payment are accepted?

The Power of Speech accepts private pay using debit/credit cards (including HSA and FSA cards). We accept the following medical insurance plans for speech therapy: Blue Cross Blue Shield and Mass General Brigham Health Plan. Please call your insurance provider directly to see what your plan covers for “in-network” speech and language therapy. If we don’t accept your insurance, your plan might reimburse you for a portion of therapy provided by an “out-of-network” clinic. Occupational therapy is private pay or "out-of-network" reimbursement from your insurance provider.

Is an evaluation required prior to services beginning?

Although an evaluation is usually required prior to starting therapy, sometimes exceptions can be made if your child has had a recent evaluation elsewhere.

What ages do you work with?

We work with children of all ages! During the intake process, we will ensure we have a clinician that is skilled in the area of your child’s needs.

Can you work with my child even if they get therapy at school?

Absolutely. We love collaborating with school speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists. We take a whole team approach, and always strive to work together with other therapists, classroom teachers, and of course family members!

Would private speech and language therapy or occupational therapy still be beneficial if my child receives Early Intervention?

Yes. Early Intervention is a free service for eligible children under 3 years old where services are typically provided in a child’s home/daycare/school by a developmental specialist. Therapy is overseen by a licensed therapist (e.g., speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, etc.). At The Power of Speech, weekly therapy is provided directly by a licensed speech-language pathologist and occupational therapists using current research based approaches. There are many benefits for both models of delivery. We encourage families to take advantage of all services available that feel right for them, which can include both Early Intervention and private therapy.

My child didn’t qualify for Early Intervention/school-based services, but I still have concerns. Can you work with them?

Private practices utilize different criteria to determine eligibility for services. If a child doesn’t qualify for services with Early Intervention or school-based services, they may still be a good candidate for private speech and language therapy or occupational therapy.

How often do we come to therapy?

The frequency of therapy will depend on the needs of your child. Many children come for two sessions per week, while others come once per week or up to four times per week. The speech-language pathologist or occupational therapist will make a recommendation for the frequency of treatment at the time of the evaluation.

How long are therapy sessions?

Therapy sessions are typically 30 minutes.

Do parents stay in the room for therapy?

If your child is under 2 years old, we encourage parents to participate in therapy sessions with their child. After the age of 2, therapy sessions are typically 1:1 with the therapist and child unless there is an additional need for parent coaching or any health concerns.
