Frequently Asked Questions

What is your current availability?

The Power of Speech has sessions available between 9AM-2:30PM during the week.

Do you anticipate any afternoon openings in the near future?

Yes! As we grow, we will have more availability in the afternoons. Contact us to receive updates and get on the waitlist.

Do you offer therapy on the weekends?

We don’t right now, but maybe in the future!

What forms of payment are accepted?

The Power of Speech accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and Mass General Brigham Health Plan. You can call your insurance provider directly to see what your plan covers for “in network” speech and language therapy. If you have an insurance that we don’t accept, you can call your insurance provider to see if they will reimburse you for a portion of therapy provided by an “out of network” practice. We also accept private pay using a debit or credit card (including HSA and FSA cards) as well as cash or checks.

Is an evaluation required prior to services beginning?

Although an evaluation is usually required prior to starting therapy, sometimes exceptions can be made if your child has had a recent evaluation.

What ages do you work with?

We work with children of all ages! During the intake process, we will ensure we have a clinician that is skilled in the area of your child’s needs.

Can you work with my child even if they get speech and language therapy at school?

Absolutely. We love collaborating with school speech-language pathologists. We take a whole team approach, and always strive to work together with other therapists, classroom teachers, and of course family members!

Would private speech and language therapy still be beneficial if my child receives Early Intervention?

Yes. Early Intervention is a free service for eligible children under 3 years old where services are typically provided in a child’s home/daycare/school by a developmental specialist. Therapy is overseen by a licensed therapist (e.g., speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, etc.). At The Power of Speech, weekly therapy is provided directly by a licensed speech-language pathologist using current research based approaches. There are many benefits for both models of delivery. We encourage families to take advantage of all services available, which can include both Early Intervention and private speech and language therapy.

My child didn’t qualify for Early Intervention/school-based services, but I still have concerns. Can you work with them?

Private practices utilize different criteria to determine eligibility for services. If a child doesn’t qualify for services with Early Intervention or school-based services, they may still be a good candidate for private speech and language therapy.

How often do we come to therapy?

The frequency of therapy will depend on the needs of your child. Many children come for two sessions per week, while others come once per week or up to four times per week. The speech-language pathologist will make a recommendation for the frequency of treatment at the time of the evaluation.

How long are therapy sessions?

Therapy sessions are typically 30 minutes, but longer sessions can be discussed with your therapist.

Do parents stay in the room for therapy?

If your child is under 2 years old, we ask parents to participate in therapy sessions with their child. After the age of 2, parents are welcome to participate in therapy or drop their child off. The parents and the clinician will decide together what is best for the child.

Will you give me suggestions on how I can help my child at home?

Yes! We will provide you with ongoing recommendations to support your child’s development outside of therapy.

Where will services be provided?

Therapy is conducted in a comfortable therapy room in the home of Jessica Brown. Children walk in and immediately feel welcome in her space, surrounded by books, toys, and even a sensory swing!

Will you come to my child’s daycare or preschool for therapy? Or will you come to our house?

Right now, therapy is only conducted at The Power of Speech, at 46 Lafayette Street in Marblehead, MA.

Do you offer teletherapy?

Therapy at The Power of Speech typically takes place in person. Teletherapy is an option than can be discussed with the clinician for certain circumstances, as long as you are located in Massachusetts during the time of the session.
