How does this board work?
 
A communication board is a great tool for children who are still learning to talk, or for kids who use a different method of communicating (e.g., sign language, gesture, or a device). It is also a great tool for English Language Learners
 
Years of research shows that the use of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC), such as a communication board, promotes the development of speech and language skills. Most important, it provides a way for children to express themself and be understood
 
A child can use the playground communication board by simply pointing to the pictures of what they want to express (e.g., they can point to “like” “slide” or “go” “fast”). A communication partner can model without expectation by pointing and saying something without expecting the child to do or say anything. For example, the communication partner can point to “go” “home” while saying, “It’s time to go home!”
For children who don’t need to use the communication board to communicate, this is a great opportunity to teach them about different ways of communicating. When differences are taught from an early age, inclusion and acceptance starts to feel like a normal part of our society
